The Dark Earth Strikes Back 0.2: Christine’s Brussels Episode 2025

From 24 to 27 March, Christine set off for Brussels. Together with the Brussels team, she examined thin sections of Dark Earth from the Heumarkt in Cologne. The focus was on phytoliths, exploring whether traces of hay — possibly linked to the historical name of Cologne’s Heumarkt — could be detected. The exchange was highly productive, with intensive discussions yielding new insights. Even in the darkest corners of Dark Earth, the team shone brightly.

The Dark Earth Strikes Back 0.1: Meihui’s Basel Episode 2025

From March 17 to 20, Meihui from the Brussels team visited the Basel team for an intensive working session. Together, we examined thin sections of Dark Earth deposits from Oudenaarde, Belgium in great detail, using micromorphological analysis to refine interpretations of their complex formation processes. Much like a Jedi navigating the galaxy, Meihui charted new paths in understanding these enigmatic urban deposits — proving that the Force is strongest when knowledge is shared.

The Dark Sider participated with a Poster at the SGM 2024!

The Dark Side crashed the 22nd Swiss Geoscience 2024 in Basel with a poster so mysterious, even Darth Vader would be intrigued. On 9 November during the symposia, participants braved the shadows to check out "Into the Dark: Uncovering the Unexpected – Geoarchaeology of Urban Dark Earth Deposits." No lightsabers were reported, but plenty of dark mysteries were uncovered! SGM 2024 Poster (PDF)
